Bromelain is an enzyme extracted from pineapple. It is commonly used as an aid to digestion, particularly protein digestion. It also has very powerful anti-inflammatory properties comparable to aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. It strengthens the immune system and interferes with the growth of malignant cells via the production of TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-6 cytokines. It has also been shown to reduce the risk of thrombosis via similar anti-inflammatory mechanisms.
